The drug Actonel is targeted for certain medical conditions impacting bones. Through our lives, your bones undergo constant renewal, although they seem solid and stable.
What can happen to your bones causing you to need to buy Actonel
- Specialized cells called osteoclasts take used calcium out of the bones while other cells called osteoblasts replace it.
- After menopause, this process could become unbalanced: calcium starts to leach out of the bones faster than replaced, leading to the brittle-bone disease called osteoporosis.
Actonel combats this problem by reducing the activity of the osteoclasts - thereby slowing the loss of calcium from the bones.
Who uses it?
Actonel medication is prescribed for postmenopausal women, both to prevent osteoporosis and to strengthen the bones once the disease has begun. It's also used in the treatment of Paget's disease, a condition in which patches of bone become softened and enlarged.
Both Actonel and similar drugs called Allendronate (Fosamax), Etidronate (Didronel in the U.S. and Didrocal in Canada) are members of the family of drugs called bisphosphonates.
Dosage and Other Information (Adults)
- Risedronate should be taken with a full glass (6-8 ounces) of water on an empty stomach and at least 30 minutes before you eat any food.
- You must remain upright (do not lie down) for 30 minutes after taking this medication.
Dosage for Osteoporosis
For the prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, the recommended dose is one 5-milligram tablet once daily, or one 35-milligram tablet each week.
Paget's Disease
The recommended dose for Paget's disease is 30 milligrams once a day for two months. A second 2-month course of therapy may be required in certain individuals.
